Dear pak Adriano..nice writings. I just fall in love with Batik, although I knew and wore them since 20 years ago. Now I build a weblog specially designed for Batik: Textile Batik and Wooden batik. Please come and drop some messages. Thank you. By the way, where do you live? Indonesia or Malaysia

On a recent trip to Bangkok I bought beautriful sarongs with the label "Batik Ratna Dewi, Pekalongan, Indonesia".
Each piece of material has a picture of a lady (presumably Ratna Dewi) printed on the fabric.
The designs are very colourful and feature mainly floral motifs.
Where / how can I ordrer more of these?

Nice work and interesting facts. I have three "caps" that I have been researching information on and your site is very helpful. My aunt purchased them in the early 1960's while in Indonesia and have given them to me. Very beautiful pieces...

Thank you.

Malaysia is 50 years old and Indonesia is 61 this year. What is the age of this beautiful art? It has been around far before the idea of a country was conceived in this region, far before they even had flags. It belongs to the people of this archipelago, we call it "Kepulauan Melayu". So I don't see why anyone country should calim the art to be theirs.
Batik is the artistic expression of the people of their surroundings and nature. Malaysia nor Indonesia can claim the rights of this wonderful art for their own. It belongs to the peaceful people of Kepulauan Melayu.

I appreciate the Batik of both countries. They both have different patterns and inspirations drawn in their Batiks. I have lived in Indonesia, where I grew up with Batik from Java and other parts of Indonesia. I am not biased, but since I came from Java, I have witnessed the history, the passion, the craftmanship of Batik processing in the region. However, the claims of who started it, does not really matter or should it be an argument. This is because, like I said, they do have their differences in terms of patterns, styles and designs. So, I believe that this matter should not be of any disturbance to both countries.

Pak, you left a comment on my blog (www.wovensunshine.wordpress.com) earlier this week. I am from Ohio. I taught myself how to batik when I was in college. I'll check back from time to time to read the articles. Thank you, Jennifer

The canting tool has many sizes... I've seen some who use their hands as the base and hence, they use very small canting tools. Whereas some batik artists who spread their cloth wide, they seem to use bigger canting tools.

These in a way effect their drawings, as the small ones are more refined, and the artists who use the big ones tend to have drawings which are a little less refined. But of course, the tool need not necessary be the main reason for this :)
